HEART OF ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY CALLS ON CUSTOMERSTO HELP THE VICTIMS OF THE HAITI EARTHQUAKE

The Heart of England Co-operative Society, the largest independent retailer in Coventry, Warwickshire, south Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, is calling on the support of its thousands of loyal members and customers to raise funds for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

The Society has teamed up with the Red Cross in a bid to raise as much money possible to help the people of Haiti.

Earthquake Appeal collection tins have been placed in each of its 55 Food, Non-Food and Funeral branches across the region in the hope of raising thousands of pounds.Ali Kurji, Chief Executive of the Heart of England Co-operative Society.

The earthquake struck on January 12th. Measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale it killed 170,000 people and affected three million lives. Every penny donated to the appeal will go towards feeding the millions who have been left hurt, homeless and hungry in the aftermath of the disaster.

Ali Kurji, Chief Executive of the Heart of England Co-operative Society, said: “The Society is proud to support the Haiti Appeal. Our involvement in the campaign will raise awareness of the great work that the Red Cross does, and we will be doing all we can to support the appeal which is a great fit with our own brand values.”

The Society launched a similar appeal in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami in 2004. On that occasion more than £15,000 was raised. Mr Kurji said he and his staff were hoping to exceed that target and urged customers to dig deep into their pockets over the next few weeks to help the fundraiser.

The Society will collect for the appeal until March 20th
